From NRO:

The Pope Has an Approval Rating?

A Quinnipiac release:

NEW YORKERS LIKE POPE AND WELCOME HIS VISIT,

QUINNIPIAC UNIVERSITY POLL FINDS

New York City voters say 70 – 15 percent that Pope Benedict XVI’s planned visit is good for the city, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.   Catholics agree 88 – 9 percent.

Nine percent of New York City voters have a “very favorable” opinion of Pope Benedict, while 47 percent have a “favorable” opinion, the independent Quinnipiac University poll finds.  Another 16 percent have an “unfavorable” opinion, and 7 percent say “very unfavorable.” Voters approve 36 – 24 percent, with 41 percent undecided, of the job the Pope is doing. Catholics approve 62 – 22 percent.

Who are the 15 percent of New Yorkers who think the Pope’s visit is bad for the city? What, Ahmadinejad can go to Columbia, but B-16 is gonna stir up trouble?

From my pastor’s homily yesterday:

“If you want to know about humility, look at the Michigan football team.”

A take on them from Fr. Z:

We must all challenge ourselves to make each and every document of the Holy See our own, in some way appropriate to our vocations.

You have, I am sure, been deeply moved and edified by the new roadie document from the Card. Martino’s office.

To help you get your start in making the roadie doc your own, here are some suggestions from the Curt Jester.

Be serious, now.

The following are some of the highlights of the new document.

  • If you are carjacked one mile, go with him two.
  • If yor are hit, turn the other signal.
  • Do not let your air bag become puffed up like the Pharisees
  • Let not the sun go down on you road rage
  • Carry your cross daily, or at least have one hanging from your rear view mirror.
  • When you enter a freeway that is backed up, go and move to the lowest place and not try to merge into the front. For every one who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.
  • Do not talk about your Honda so that it can be said of you “That he did not say it of his own Accord.”
  • Hydroplaning is not the same thing as walking on water, avoid it.
  • Before Jesus performed the miracle at Cana, he appointed a designated driver.
  • Do not say “Are we there yet”, but rather “It is good to be here.”

ME: But of course, as everyone knows, there are 15 commandments. Moses just dropped 5 on the way down from Sinai. (If you don’t get this, you need to rent History of the World Part 1. And I do mean NEED to.)

Great Corner exchange:

Quoting Verses From The Koran   [Andrew Stuttaford]

Andy, we’ve been over this ground before, but I still think it’s worth making this point again. You are quite right that (a) there are some horrifying verses in the Koran, and that (b) they are too often passed over or excused (most notably by people such as Karen Armstrong, in my view one of the more disreputable apologists for religious fanaticism to come scurrying into view in recent years) by commentators who should, and often do, know better. Nevertheless, it’s worth remembering that there’s plenty of savagery to be found in the Old Testament too. What really matters is not what was said or written back in the Dark Ages (or, in the case of the Bible, even earlier), but how those words are interpreted now, if, indeed, at all.

Re: Quoting Verses From The Koran   [Andy McCarthy]

Yes, Andrew.  And I’ll address that, too, the minute we have a global terror campaign motivated by an interpretation of the Old Testament.

“Where’s my leaf?”

What the little kid in front of my parents said at Mass today, after seeing us choir members process in with palm branches in hand. The congregation couldn’t get theirs until after Mass. Apparently this little guy thought that was unfair.
