This is interesting. One should not that a priest may not demand that someone share the matter with the police before receiving absolution. That would violate the sanctity of the confessional.

I do wonder about the Dr Chase character. I didn't know he was an ex-seminarian. I have just watched the DVD's of season 3 as we don't get network TV. In that he tells Foreman that when he feels guilty he likes to talk to God and pretend someone is listening. Not the best line for evangelizing. It does seem an ex-seminarian would either reject the faith entirely or take it more seriously than that.

Great analysis of FOX’s pops culture view of the often-misunderstood Catholic sacrament. The priest's tone of voice and simplicity of dialogue was UN-characteristic for confession in general these days... in my experience anyway, but you provided sound context for those who are curious. It's certainly a very personal and emotional experience that can never be distilled into a 1-minute scene.

What's up with FOX-TV and Catholicism anyway? Scriptwriters must sense a need to provide polarity between "Catholic believer and secular humanist" in their programming these days. Hmm let me see, what's really behind it all?
